eNargiZinc at HYCELETC 2026, X Symposium on Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Advanced Batteries

We are pleased to share that researchers from the eNargiZinc project participated in HYCELETC 2026, X Symposium on Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Advanced Batteries, held in Alicante, Spain on 8 – 11 June 2026.

Title Improved long-term stability for agarose-based gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) for sustainable zinc-air batteries (ZABs)

Zinc-air batteries are a promising alternative to lithium-based energy storage because they use abundant, inexpensive, and safer materials. However, their development is limited by the need for stable electrolytes, since many conventional synthetic gel polymer electrolytes are not sustainable, while bio-based alternatives often degrade under alkaline conditions. This work proposes crosslinking as a strategy to improve the mechanical and chemical stability of bio-based gel polymer electrolytes for zinc-air batteries. The developed material is evaluated using mechanical compression testing, aging studies under close to operational conditions, thermal characterization as well as full discharge tests in ZAB cell assembly.

Impact and dissemination

The scientific community reached is highly relevant to the project, as the symposium brings together researchers working on advanced batteries beyond lithium-ion technologies. In particular, topics aligned with the main focus of eNargiZinc, sodium and zinc-based technologies were discussed. The event gathered researchers and industry representatives from key academic and technological centers in Spain, as well as international participants working in the field of energy-storage.
